In October the cranberry bogs along the Acushnet River flood red, and the oaks on the slopes above them turn about a week later. JD Tree Service works those yards and bog roads — taking down trees that have gone hollow or crowded a house, pruning to take the reach out of a limb that hangs over a porch, trimming crowns back from wires, and clearing what a nor'easter tears loose off Buzzards Bay. Wet snow and salt wind put more weight on a branch here than anyone expects, so deadwood comes out well before December. The finished yard is the pleasure: stone wall swept clean, no ruts in the lawn, green showing under a tree that finally has room. Acushnet has kept its old field edges and its trees, and both ask for a hand now and then.
