Between Gonzales and the river, Sorrento's sugarcane comes up green in April and keeps climbing until the tractors take it in the fall. In between, an Ascension Parish afternoon can drop an inch of rain in twenty minutes and leave the yards steaming by four o'clock. Keep off My Grass works around that weather — mowing, edging, string trimming and blowing down the drives, hedges kept off the porch rails, cuttings picked up rather than left to mat in the damp. The reward is the hour just after: wet cane out past the fence, a lawn cut straight, the edges standing sharp along the concrete. Sorrento, Gonzales, Prairieville, Geismar and Darrow are the regular rounds.
