West of town the St. Landry prairie opens out flat and green, rice water shining between the levees, and Highway 190 runs straight through the middle of it. J-N-K Cajun Cutters works the yards along those roads: mowing, edging, trimming around mailboxes and oak roots and porch steps, then clearing the cuttings before they settle in as thatch. Summer starts early here — the mowers are moving while the dew is still down and the heat is still thinking about it. By afternoon a thunderhead stacks up over the Atchafalaya to the east, and the aim is a finished lawn before the first fat drops land.
