About Tate's Cuttin Up Lawn Service Inc.

By afternoon the light over Bayou DeSiard turns thick and gold, and the cicadas take up their long argument in the moss-hung trees along the bank. Tate's Cuttin Up Lawn Service Inc. works right on through it, the whir of the trimmer answering the heat measure for measure. They mow and edge the yards that lean toward the bayou, cut the grass low and even, and line every walk and flowerbed with a crisp finished border. A Monroe yard grows fast in July, and there is a plain good feeling in taming it — the clippings raked up, the edges drawn sharp, the whole lot looking looked-after again. When the last pass is done, the lawn seems to breathe easier as the delta evening comes on.
