The Groundsman

About The Groundsman

The name says what the job is: someone who knows the ground. In Livingston Parish that ground is sandy loam under longleaf pine, quick to green after a warm rain and quicker still to need cutting. The Groundsman keeps it in hand with a steady mowing schedule, edges walked along sidewalks and driveways, and trimming worked in tight where a mower deck cannot follow. When autumn turns the light gold by four and the pines let go of their straw across every lawn, cleanups pull the yard back open — straw and leaves off the beds, off the tops of the hedges, off the drive. The result is a place that looks looked-after from the road, which is the whole idea. Livingston, Albany, Springfield, Watson and Denham Springs are all on the route.
