3rd Day Gardening

About 3rd Day Gardening

Eunice wakes slow and green, with dew still beaded on the St. Augustine and a mockingbird running scales from a power line. That is the hour 3rd Day Gardening likes best — mower off the trailer, the first pass laid down while the prairie air is still cool enough to work in. Out past the town limits the rice fields run flat to the horizon, and a yard cut clean holds that same wide, unhurried order. Mowing, trimming, edging along the walk, and the clippings blown off the drive before the sun climbs high. By mid-morning the whole lot smells like the growing season at once, and the lines run straight enough to read from a porch swing.
