About Sanders landscaping

January on the levee is a gray-warm sort of day, wind coming in off the Intracoastal with almost nothing cold behind it. Sanders landscaping favors that stretch of the year for shaping work — hedges cut back, crowded shrubs opened up, beds cleared and mulched while the yard is quiet and willing. Down here dormancy is only ever a suggestion; the grass slows but does not stop, so the mowing keeps its rhythm straight through. Estelle lies low and open between the water and the fields, which means light reaches the yards from every side and rewards anyone who bothers to plan for it. Come spring the pruning shows itself, and no one remembers the gray afternoon that made it happen.
