Letters on the Lane

About Letters on the Lane

By evening the lanes off the main roads go soft — porch lights coming on one at a time, mailboxes standing in their row, the ditch grass still warm from the day. Letters on the Lane keeps those roadside strips and front yards in order: mowing, edging along the drive and around the mailbox post, string trimming the fence line and culvert, then blowing the concrete clear. In this part of Vermilion Parish a yard runs right up to the lane, so the edge is the first thing a neighbor ever sees. Cutting it honest is the whole point of the trip. After dark the street reads as one long tidy line, house after house down the way.
