Yocum Lawn Service

About Yocum Lawn Service

North of Shelbyville the county opens up — hayfields cut and rolled, gravel drives running a hundred yards back to a farmhouse, and lawns big enough that you plan the route before you drop the deck. Yocum Lawn Service works that ground through September, when the mornings finally cool and the grass comes back strong after August: mowing wide, trimming around barns, posts and the ring of trees every old place seems to have, edging the drive, and clearing the season's fallen limbs. Out here a yard is not a rectangle, it is whatever the ground allows, and the finish depends on knowing where it turns soft after rain. There is a good stillness to a country place at the end of a cut, all that space lying even and green. Then you load up and drive back toward town with the windows down.
