About John's Lawns inc.

In Russell the Ohio River does most of the talking — barge horns in the fog, the long steel patience of the rail yard, the Ohio hills standing green across the water. John's Lawns inc. mows the streets that climb up off the bottom, where the lots run narrow, the shade is old, and a yard can go from dry to soaked overnight when weather comes up the valley. Evening is the finest hour for it: the low light turns fresh-cut grass gold and every edge along the sidewalk shows sharp. Trimming is done by hand around porch steps, fence corners and the hydrants nobody else bothers with. By the time the mower is loaded, the whole block looks like somebody is proud of it — because somebody is.
