A cut above the rest

About A cut above the rest

First light comes over the ridges east of Mount Sterling and finds the fescue silver with dew. That is when the mowers roll out, while the air is still cool off the creek bottoms and the day hasn't decided how hot it intends to get. A cut above the rest works one yard at a time: an even height across the open middle, a clean line where turf meets drive, clippings blown back off the walk before the truck moves on. By the time Montgomery County is properly awake, the lawns along the route look combed. It is plain work done carefully, and it shows best in the long slant of evening light.
