Jenkins was laid out along the creek with Pine Mountain standing over it, and the yards here are narrow and steep, stacked one above the next up the hollows. Mowing that kind of ground is a walking job as much as a riding one — the mower worked across the slope, the trimmer finishing the banks and stone walls where nothing else will reach. Late spring, with laurel coming on up the mountain and everything growing at once, is the hardest stretch of the year to keep pace with. Done well, a hillside yard reads clean from the road below: one height all the way up, a firm edge along the walk, not a clipping left on the steps. In a town built into the mountainside, a cut yard is how a house says somebody is home.
