East of town the Green River runs slow past Spottsville, and the oaks above that water hold their color deep into October. That is the turn of the year when the work changes hands: last mowings, leaves raked and hauled off the grass, limbs and brush pulled out of the fence rows — and then the saw comes out. Firewood gets cut, split and stacked so it is ready when a Henderson cold snap arrives overnight, the way they tend to here. Two kinds of work on one calendar, and both of them end with a place in better shape than it started. There is something honest about closing out the season with a full rick standing against the shed wall.
