About B's Mowing and More
Out Scaffold Cane Road the yards run long and a little uphill, and July heat does not let go until well after supper. B's Mowing and More is often still going then, in the last gold hour when the air finally breaks and tree shadows stretch across freshly cut rows. The work is mowing, trimming around posts and steps, edging the concrete, and clearing the clippings — kept on a schedule so nothing gets ahead of anyone. Grass that is tall by Thursday is a hayfield by Monday in a Kentucky summer, and staying out in front of it is most of the job. There is a plain pleasure in shutting the engine off at dusk and looking back at a place that has been put right.
