Gomez Lawn Tree

About Gomez Lawn Tree

Delano holds onto its brick and its low storefronts, and on a summer evening the west-bank light lands long and orange down Douglas Avenue. Gomez Lawn Tree takes the yards on this side of the river, the narrow ones behind the old houses and the wide corner lots that catch every bit of that sun. A cut here means mowing tight to the porch steps, trimming out the alley fence, edging where the sidewalk has heaved a little with age, and taking the trimmings with them. Trees matter on these blocks — the shade they throw is the reason a lawn survives August — so the work is done around them with care instead of speed. The result is an old street corner that looks looked-after, which is the kind of thing neighbors notice without saying.
