The Douglas Avenue bridge carries traffic over the Arkansas River right at the edge of downtown, and on a cold morning the water below throws off just enough mist to frost the railings before the rest of the city has caught up. Ferry Lawnscapes clears driveways and lots on both banks, working from downtown across the water and back, timing the route so the bridge deck itself is bare before the first commuters cross it. The river rarely freezes solid, but the ground on either side does, and the crew has learned which lots on the west bank hold their ice longest in the bridge's shadow. It's a route that crosses the city's original dividing line, block by block on both sides of the water, long before most people are up to see it. By the time bridge traffic picks up, the driveways along both banks are already down to bare concrete.
