Morning comes early over the Kaw, mist still lifting off the river while the mowers are warming in the drive. Yard Crafters works the neighborhoods that climb from the bottomland up toward Burnett's Mound, where the prairie wind never quite quits and a July thunderhead can stack up white in the west by mid-afternoon. Mowing, edging along walks and drives, string trimming into the corners a deck can't reach, fertilizing and weed control through the growing months, aeration and overseeding when the grass is ready to root, and leaf cleanups when the cottonwoods and oaks finally let go. There is real satisfaction in the last pass of the day: stripes laid straight down a Shawnee County yard, the edge along the sidewalk cut clean as a chalk line, every clipping blown off the concrete before the truck pulls away. It is ordinary work done carefully, on lawns that have to stand up to Kansas heat, Kansas rain, and the long gold light of an October evening.
