West of town Topeka thins out into open country, and by early afternoon the wind is coming across it steady from the south, laying the fescue flat and letting it stand back up. Midwest Mowing lives on that end of Shawnee County — the wide lots out past Wanamaker, the deep lawns that want a long straight pass and an even speed. Cutting into prairie wind takes patience: overlap the pass, keep the discharge downwind, come back across so the stripes lie the way the light wants them. Trimming around the mailbox posts and the fence lines is the part nobody photographs and everybody notices. When the last pass closes the pattern and the dust settles behind the trailer, a big Kansas lawn reads as one continuous field of green.
