There's a strange twist to winter in this part of Reno County: deep under the salt beds that make Hutchinson famous, salt old enough to have never seen weather at all sits still and dry, while up on the surface a single Kansas front can bury a South Hutchinson garden bed under drifts by dinnertime. Premier Borders spends its warm months laying the clean lines that mark a yard's edges, so when snow blurs every border into one white sheet, the crew already knows exactly where the walk, the drive, and the flower bed begin and end. Clearing snow along those same lines in winter is just the other half of the same job — keeping a yard's shape visible whatever the weather does to it. The plow and shovel work runs along the streets near the river crossing into Hutchinson proper, wherever a border was cut true enough to still show through the white the morning after.
