East of Russell, the ground breaks into the limestone bluffs above Wilson Lake, rougher country than the flat wheat ground closer to town, and Mai Excavating Inc has spent plenty of seasons cutting building pads into that same rock and clay. Winter turns that same equipment to snow, working driveways and lots both in town and out toward the lake, where wind off the water can pile a drift against a bluff face that never sees direct sun until afternoon. Frozen ground here holds its shape stubbornly, so a plow blade has to find the grade underneath the snow the same way an excavator has to find it under the dirt. There's a particular satisfaction in opening up a lot or a long driveway and seeing the true grade again, dark and bare against the white bluffs beyond. Russell's edge toward the lake stays a little wilder than downtown, and this crew is built for exactly that kind of ground.
