Riverton sits along old Route 66 where it crosses the Spring River, close enough to the water that the willows and sycamores lining the bank hold onto snow long after the rest of this stretch of southeast Kansas has gone back to gravel and gray chert. Outdoor Solutions LLC works the driveways and yards tucked along that river road, where the ground is rockier and rougher than the flat prairie farther north, clearing snow off gravel drives and the pull-offs where travelers once parked for the old roadside stores. A winter storm here often arrives soft and wet off the Ozark foothills to the east, heavier than the dry powder that blows through the open plains, and it clings to everything it touches. There's a real satisfaction in clearing a long gravel lane down along the river bottom, the water still moving dark under a skin of ice at the edges. Riverton's stretch of the Mother Road stays passable through the winter because someone's out clearing it before the frost sets for good.
