In The Garden

About In The Garden

By seven o'clock on a July morning Pittsburg is already warm, and the backyards smell like cut grass and tomato vines. In The Garden works those early hours — mowing, trimming, edging, keeping the borders along the fence weeded and shaped, and carrying off whatever the week left behind. Southeast Kansas summers are generous and unruly at the same time; nothing here really stops growing until frost. The best moment comes at the end, standing back to find the lawn, the border and the path all agreeing with one another. A yard tended that way stops being a chore and turns into somewhere a person actually sits.
