In February the Overland Park Arboretum is all structure — bare limbs over Wolf Creek, dormant turf the color of wheat straw, the year not started yet but entirely decided. Ryan Lawn & Tree treats those cold weeks as the beginning of the season rather than the end of one, because the pre-emergent that stops crabgrass in May has to be down before the ground warms in March. From there the calendar unfolds: feedings spaced through spring, weed control as the broadleaves show themselves, mowing once the fescue wakes, then aeration and seed when September cools things off again. Kansas asks a lot of a cool-season lawn between those bookends, and the answer is timing more than anything else. Done in order, the yard holds its color from thaw to frost.
