Overland Park soil packs down hard by the end of a hot summer — clay under fescue, walked on and mowed over since April, holding water on the surface instead of letting it through. The Plug Guy works the September and early-October stretch out along Pflumm Road and beyond, pulling cores across a yard and leaving the plugs to crumble back into it. Those small open channels are where the seed lands and the fertilizer goes, and where autumn rain finally reaches roots it had been sliding over all summer. Nights are cool by then, the grass is growing again, and the timing does more for a thin lawn than anything else on the calendar. Come spring the difference shows up as density: fewer bare patches, less room for crabgrass, a lawn that closed its own gaps.
