Dusk comes fast and flat over the cul-de-sac loops on the west side of Overland Park, streetlights buzzing on just as a storm tapers off, and that's usually when H.C.S.S. A cul-de-sac is an odd shape to plow well, no through line, just a widening circle of driveways that all need the same clean turn, and doing it right means the loop still looks tidy at the end instead of scraped up at angles. The light at that hour turns everything one shade of blue-gray, snowbanks and rooftops and sky all the same color until porch lights start clicking on down the block. It rewards knowing which houses back onto the greenway and which sit on flat open lots, since the wind treats them differently. By full dark, one loop after another sits clean and quiet, ready for whoever's coming home.
