Midway Coop - Osborne Elevator

About Midway Coop - Osborne Elevator

The Osborne Elevator stands taller than anything else on this stretch of the Solomon River bottoms, visible from the county road long before the rest of town comes into view, and it needs its own ground kept clear same as any farmstead does. Midway Coop - Osborne Elevator's crew plows the lot and approach roads around the tower through every storm, because a truck line waiting on grain can't afford a drifted-in scale house. Wind off the open plains piles snow against the base of the elevator faster than almost anywhere else in the county, the tower itself acting like the one tall thing for miles for the drift to build against. Farmers hauling in from the section roads need that approach bare in a way a house driveway never has to be — a loaded truck can't take the chance a car might. By the second pass of the morning the scale house door is clear, the lot scraped down, and the elevator goes back to being the marker on the horizon instead of the obstacle in the road.
