On the west edge of Olathe, where the newest subdivisions still back up against open wheat and pasture ground, the wind has nothing to slow it before it hits the last row of houses. Midwest Tree keeps the windbreaks and yard trees out there standing through the ice, then turns the same trucks to clearing the driveways underneath them once the storm has passed. A Kansas ice event loads a bare winter branch heavier than people expect, and a crew that spends its summers reading tree limbs knows exactly which driveway will need clearing twice — once for the snow, once for what the ice drops out of the canopy above it. Out here the horizon runs flat clear to the tree line, and a plow blade can see a drift building from a quarter mile off. The last driveways in town to lose their snow are usually the first ones clear again, simply because the crew never left that end of the route.
