A few miles north of Norton, the county road runs straight to the Nebraska line, open wheat stubble and winter pasture on both sides with nothing to break the wind until it hits a shelterbelt or a farmstead. Donovan Excavating runs its equipment those section roads first when snow moves through, clearing the lanes that get a rancher's truck to cattle waiting on the far side of a pasture before circling back into town for driveways and smaller jobs. Out here the work is measured in miles of open road rather than blocks, and a single drift across a lane can be the difference between feed getting delivered and a herd going hungry another day. Prairie Dog Creek threads through some of that ground, low spots where snow drifts three feet deep while the ridge above stays nearly bare. By the time the equipment rolls back into Norton proper, the crew has already put in a longer day than the town clock would suggest.
