Moundridge sits low and level on the McPherson County plain, its grid of streets running as straight as the rows of wheat that surround it — Turkey Red wheat, the hard winter variety Mennonite settlers carried here in the 1870s, still planted in the same black soil. G & G Sales keeps its lot along the highway clear through the winter, blade scraping gravel bare so trucks and trailers can turn in without sliding, then works out to the driveways and small-town streets nearby. The grain elevator throws its long shadow across town by midafternoon, and that's often when the crew is still out, chasing the last drifted corner of a lot before the light goes flat and gray. There's a particular satisfaction in a lot scraped down to bare gravel in a town this orderly — one more straight line in a place built on them. When the wind picks up off the open fields west of town, it's the low spots and fence-line drifts that get the second pass.
