Out where Rice County's wheat ground runs flat to every horizon, Cow Creek is often the only bend in an otherwise ruler-straight landscape, and Lyons grew up right along it. Smoky River Nursery and Landscaping spends its summers coaxing things to grow in that hard-baked soil, so when the fields go from stubble to white, the same crews turn their attention to driveways, walks, and the lots around town instead of flower beds. There's a rhythm to it: the plow blade clears where the trowel dug, and the trucks that hauled mulch all summer haul snow off the storefronts downtown come winter. Mornings after a big system, the town's grain elevator is usually the first thing visible against a grey sky, and a clean stretch of sidewalk in front of it is a small, honest reward for early work. It's plain country and a plain job, done right.
