Where the Smoky Hill River bends along the edge of Lindsborg, the bottomland holds a cold mist most winter mornings long after the rest of the valley has cleared, and it's through that mist that L & K Contractors runs its first plow routes of the day. The company's crews know the low ground drifts differently than the bluffs above town, deeper, wetter, slower to clear even after the sun is up, so driveways and lots near the river get worked with extra care and often a second pass before the ice underneath can set. Uphill, toward the older stone-built blocks of town, the work moves faster, streets and commercial lots opened in wide, clean strokes before the morning's business gets underway. The company treats a construction site and a home driveway the same way in winter: clear it completely, not just enough to get by. By the time the mist over the river bottom finally burns off, the driveways and lots worked since dawn are already dry-edged and bare.
