Jones Construction runs the same graders and loaders through a Wichita County winter that it runs through a summer of road work, only now the job is snow instead of caliche. When a High Plains storm piles drifts across the section roads leading into Leoti, the crew is out with blades and buckets before the county even opens for business, cutting lanes wide enough for a school bus and a grain truck to pass each other without either one leaving the road. Driveways and building sites get cleared with the same equipment that shapes a foundation pad in July, pushed back to bare gravel or concrete rather than left in a half-hearted pass. The flat country out here means a wind can refill a cleared road in under an hour, so the crew often circles back a second time before a storm has finished blowing through. There's pride in leaving a lane open that a neighbor can actually use, not just a track wide enough for one more truck to get stuck in.
