Out here the wind runs flat and hard across miles of stubble, and a fresh snow can seal a gravel road shut in an hour, so the work starts early and keeps moving, yard to yard, until every lane a farmer needs is passable again. Windrows go up along the fence lines in long, even ridges, the kind that let a pickup and a combine both get where they're going. By the time the co-op's lights flick on for the day, the loading docks and truck routes around Leoti are clear, bare ground showing through white for the first time since the storm. There's a particular satisfaction in watching a farm truck roll through on schedule after a hard overnight snow, proof that the ground crew got there first.
