A western meadowlark takes the top wire above the Salt Creek Valley and holds one long tumbling note over the west side of Leavenworth — usually while Meadowlark Mowing is already out, cutting before the dew has burned off. The work goes in order: mow, trim around posts and foundations, edge the walks, then clear the clippings so the concrete looks as clean as the grass. Kansas lawns run in surges, ankle-deep after a week of June rain and stopped cold in an August dry spell, and the schedule bends to that instead of arguing with it. Spring and fall cleanups pull the winter scatter and the last of the oak leaves off before the ground goes hard. The payoff comes at the end of a route, looking back down a yard where the stripes run true and every corner comes to a point.
