From the top of Mount Oread you can watch a Lawrence snow cover the whole river valley in a single hour — downtown roofs, the far bank of the Kaw, the bare trees of South Park all going the same pale gray at once. Parker Landscape works the driveways and walkways spilling down the neighborhoods off that hill, clearing paths on grades steep enough that an ordinary snowfall becomes something worth taking seriously. The crew starts on the hill streets first, where ice forms fastest in the ridge's own shadow, then works outward toward the flatter blocks nearer the river. There's a certain flat, silvery light that shows up over the bluffs after a Lawrence storm, the kind that makes a freshly cleared driveway look almost deliberate, like it was always meant to look that clean. By the time campus stirs for the day, this crew has usually already moved on to the next block.
