Down along the Kansas River, cottonwoods and sycamores lean out over the bank heavy with ice after a hard freeze, limbs bowed low enough to nearly brush the bluffs rising above them. Forest Keepers Tree Care isn't out clearing that riverbank — this crew works the driveways, walkways, and lots on the streets above it, taking care of the neighborhoods that back up to those bluffs once a Douglas County storm has passed through. Ice holds on longer near the water than it does up on the open ridgetop streets closer to campus, so these particular blocks often get a second look after the first plow through. The crew works early, ahead of an overnight refreeze, clearing driveways and treating the low spots where runoff pools against a curb. A cleared driveway here is a plain thing set against a fairly dramatic river view, but it's what gets a car onto the road.
