About Bell's Turf

Lawrence is a town built on a hill, and Bell's Turf spends its days on the pitch of it, where the yards under Mount Oread step up and down from one another like shelves. Tall fescue on those banks wants to be cut high through the July heat and cut often in the mild weeks on either side of it, and the mowing schedule follows that. Late in the day the light comes long across the slope and every blade throws its own shadow, which is when a fresh cut shows exactly what it is. Trimming along retaining walls, edging the sidewalk seam, sweeping the clippings off the front steps — the finish work is what makes the mowing look deliberate.
