A few miles outside Larned, the limestone barracks of old Fort Larned still stand the way they have for more than a century, snow catching along the mortar lines and drifting deep against the north-facing walls. Eakin Enterprises doesn't work that ground, but the same fronts that dust the fort also drop snow on the driveways and streets of town, and this crew is often out plowing before the rest of Larned has stirred. Pawnee County winters run short on drama and long on wind — six inches in the field can turn into a foot against a fence line by morning, all rearranged overnight. The work is steady rather than eventful: driveway, walkway, lot, and back again, done so an ordinary morning in town can start on time. By midday the streets look almost untouched by the storm, which is the whole point of getting to them early.
