Six hundred fifty feet below Hutchinson's streets, the old salt mine holds a temperature that never moves, winter or summer; up on the surface where Koalatee Tree Service works, nothing sits still once a front comes through. Big cottonwoods along Cow Creek and the shade trees over the older blocks near downtown carry their own patterns of ice and shadow, and this crew reads a snow-loaded canopy the same practiced way it reads storm damage in July. When the plows come out, that's the job — driveways scraped to the concrete, walks broken free of ice, the apron by the mailbox cleared so the carrier isn't wading through a drift to reach the box. Hutchinson winters run short but sharp, a hard freeze followed by a thaw followed by another freeze, and each swing changes what a driveway needs from one morning to the next. Clearing it right, block after block, is simply the job, whatever the sky is doing that particular week.
