About Cross Mowing

Trains have always run through Hutchinson — long grain strings easing across the crossings on the north side, horns carrying for miles over flat country. Cross Mowing works the afternoons between them, mowing and trimming yards from the older blocks near the tracks out to the newer streets. The Kansas wind never really quits here, so the clippings scatter and the blower comes out and the drive gets left tidy anyway. A lawn cut properly holds its lines for a week: straight, even, edged where it meets the sidewalk. That is what they are after, house after house, until the light goes long and gold.
