By mid-October the light along Grand Avenue turns low and yellow, and every cottonwood in Haysville starts letting go at once. Becks Lawn Care spends those weeks moving leaves — off the turf, out of the beds, away from the downspouts — so the grass underneath can breathe its way through winter. The mowing keeps on, shorter and slower now, until the Bermuda goes tan and the season closes itself out. Come spring they are back at the same yards, clearing what winter left behind and laying down the first stripes of the year. There is real satisfaction in a lawn raked bare on a cold bright morning, the whole street smelling like leaf dust.
