Shady Waters Landscape LLC takes its name from the stretch of the Little Arkansas that runs behind Halstead's small riverside park, where the shade trees the crew tends all summer drop bare and gray over water that can skin over with ice by January. In the cold months, that same landscape work turns toward the walkways through the park and the driveways on the streets nearby, cleared with the same unhurried attention the crew gives a flower bed in June. Halstead's cold arrives slow and tends to linger, and the crew has learned to work the shaded, low spots first, since ice there can outlast the sun by hours some days. There's a kind of continuity in tending one place across every mood it takes on, the same riverbank looking entirely different in July than it does under a hard frost. The walks cleared all winter are, come spring, the same ones that will need mowing again.
