Stone Sand Co., Inc. works out of the river-bottom country along the Arkansas, where the ground itself is layered with the sand and gravel that built plenty of Great Bend's roads and foundations, and the same yard that stockpiles material for concrete crews all summer keeps a separate pile ready for winter — sand and grit for the ice that forms fast on Kansas asphalt after a hard freeze. When a storm comes through, the trucks that usually haul aggregate to job sites switch to spreading traction across lots and walkways instead, working the coldest hours first while the ice is still thin. There's a plainness to the work that suits the town — no shine to it, just grip underfoot where there was none an hour before. The yard sits close enough to the water that the crew can watch the cottonwoods along the bank go white before the streets do. By the time Great Bend's shops open downtown, the ice underfoot has already lost its edge.
