A dozer blade that can grade a house pad flat by summer switches to a plow blade by winter, clearing driveways and lots around Girard's courthouse square with the same equipment the crew uses for foundation work the rest of the year. The old mined land holds cold air in its low spots longer than the flatter farm ground to the east, so snow lingers in those hollows after Girard's main streets have already cleared. The crew works the square first, then fans out along the county roads that thread between the old pits, opening lanes wide enough for a rural mail route to keep running.
