After the first hard frost, the ground east toward Edgerton goes tawny all the way out to the grain elevators, and Gardner's lawns settle into their dormant color. The Lawn Cypress spends the growing months getting them ready for exactly that: weekly mowing, edging along drives and walks, trimming out the corners a mower cannot reach, and clearing the cuttings on every visit. There is something satisfying about a dormant lawn that still carries clean edges — the shape stays even after the color has gone. Winter light out here comes in low and long and forgives nothing. Then February softens, the fescue greens at the crown, and it all begins again.
