The Arkansas River runs low and wide through Garden City most winters, more sandbar than river, and the wind that comes across it off the open high plains doesn't need much snow to make a road disappear. gere works those approach roads and driveways on the mornings when Finney County wakes up to a skiff of white blown sideways into drifts nobody would guess from the forecast. Garden City's grid is wide and flat, built for grain trucks and feedlot traffic more than foot traffic, so a plow has room to work fast and turn clean at the end of a block. Near Finnup Park, where the trees stand thicker than anywhere else in town, snow sits longer in the shade than it does out on the open avenues past the edge of the feedyards. The job is simple and repeated: open the drive, open the lot, salt what's left, before the wind decides to move it all somewhere else.
