Come late October, Fort Scott's older streets go ankle-deep, oak and hackberry and sycamore letting down over the porches and the lawns beneath them. Phillips Lawn Care runs the last cuts of the year through all of that, mowing, trimming, edging, and clearing leaf litter and clippings away so the turf goes into winter with air around it. A lawn put away clean in November is a lawn that comes back thick in April; the fall work is the part nobody watches and everybody notices later. Around Fort Scott and out toward Redfield, Bronson and Garland, the route keeps running until the grass finally quits growing. Then the yards sit dormant and tidy, waiting on the first warm week.
