Luke's Lawn

About Luke's Lawn

On a June evening out near the Emporia State campus the light hangs on past eight and the cicadas start up in the shade trees. Luke's Lawn is often still going then, finishing one more yard while the heat lets go of the pavement. The mowing is straightforward; the finish is not — stripes laid straight, the string trimmer taken around every tree ring, walks blown back toward the grass instead of into the street. There's a real pleasure in cutting a college rental and a lifelong homeowner's yard on the same block, one after the other, and leaving both even. Emporia summers run long, and this is a good way to fill them.
