Lease roads and pad approaches get cleared first, since a stuck truck out among the pumpjacks can cost a whole morning. From the lease roads the crew works back toward the Walnut River and the streets near downtown, clearing driveways block by block. Wind-driven snow piles deepest in the timbered draws along those lease roads, holding on longer there than it does on the flatter ground closer to the river, so those particular approaches get watched last and closest. Toward evening, with the pumpjacks still working slow against a darkening sky, the lease-road drives this crew reached earlier are already holding bare ground.
