West of the new rail yard, Edgerton still looks the way it did for a hundred years — open section roads, shelterbelts, driveways that run a quarter mile back from the mailbox. MINDEN LAWNS works that ground first in a storm, since a farm drive left undone can strand somebody out there for a whole day. Only after the long approaches are open does the crew turn to the shorter in-town runs, where the work is measured in single driveways instead of quarter miles. Drift off open farmland tends to pile heaviest against a windbreak or fence line, so those particular stretches sometimes get cleared twice if the wind won't quit. By midday, with frost still holding in the shelterbelt shade but gone everywhere the sun has reached, most of the route is already down to open gravel and pavement.
